School Counselors

VISION

The Springfield Public Schools Counseling Program promotes a culture of equity and achievement that prepares each student to be a lifelong learner as well as a contributing member of their community.

MISSION

The Springfield Public Schools Counseling Program supports every student within the learning community. School counselors provide and deliver programs that address academic and social-emotional development, and college and career readiness. As a result, every student is empowered to realize their full potential and become college and career ready to adapt and achieve success in an ever-changing world.

School Counselor Role

School counselors are certified/licensed professionals, who hold at a minimum a masters degree,  participate in on going professional development, and uphold ASCA ethical and professional standards. They provide SPS students with academic development, college and career readiness, social-emotional growth, and mental health support.   School counselors play an essential role in creating an equitable, inclusive school culture promoting success for every student.

SPS school counselors are assigned to every SPS PreK—12 school building and uphold ethical and professional standards to design, implement and manage comprehensive, developmental, results-based school counseling programs that promote and enhance student success. School counseling programs, now defined by outcomes of student academic, career, and social-emotional, are accountable, viable, and visible in the eyes of school stakeholders.

Increased accountability practices can meaningfully change the substance and perception of school counseling in the context of today’s school reform agenda. School counselors emphasize the need for students to acquire affective and educational competence to better prepare them to become productive participants in today’s society and for tomorrow’s world. As leaders and advocates, SPS school counselors have positioned themselves at the forefront of educational change and school improvement.
